Capital of Guanenta's province, is a colombian municipality located on the road between Bucaramanga and Bogota, in Santander's department. Is the most important urban nucleus of the south of Santander. Also, it's famous for being a perfect destination for adventure sports and experiential tourism.
In the XVI century emerged the first populations and the others were product of the trade, mining, quinoa's extraction, tobacco cultivation, etc. San Gil was founded and was inhabited by spanish people, thus it was an important power point during the colony. In 1887, San Gil obtained the title of Municipality because the governor Peña Solano decreed the municipal ordinance.
In 2004, San Gil was designated the turistic capital of Santander's department. Currently, it develops in the commercial, urban, educational and industrial sector. It is cataloged as the third largest and most important city in the department.
