In Antioquia is located the Colombian municipality of Betania, which is placed at 1550 meters above the sea level. In pre-Columbian times the territory was settled by indigenous known as Tapartoes, Citaraes and Naratupes. On the beginning there were farms in this area, in 1889 there is a territory with some more population and in 1920 the area achieved the independence from its neighbors, Andes and Bolivar, despite of their opposition. It's also known as the capital of the guasca music. The main attractions are the Plaza Principal with the Casa Parroquial San Rafael which has a Gothic style and its construction took 40 years, the Farallones del Citara, which include virgin forests quite beautiful and showy; they are part of the Reserva Forestal Protectora Regional Farallones del Citara; the Jesus Maria Restrepo Velez is a museum that keeps works of this artist and thirteen Christs sculpted in bronze and El Mirador, made of stone and wood, that remembers the indigenous architecture. The main typical dishes of the region are the bandeja paisa, an abundant and delicious plate that you should share with someone to finish it, the sancocho de gallina, a thick soup with agave and banana, the tamales and empanadas. The festivals that we stand out of Betania are the Fiestas Patronales a San Rafael Arcangel in September where you will see cavalcades, parades, celebration and union, the Festival de la Musica Guasca in November, with representations of varied music groups and flashy parades, and in July the Fiesta de Aniversarion del Municipio and the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen.
