Villeta is a Colombian municipality, part of Cundinamarca, whose name means little villa and it's dedicated to the archangel Miguel; it's also called La Ciudad Dulce de Colombia (the sweet city) due to the panela, a dessert they produce. The foundation of Villeta took place in 1551 and was at the beginning settled by religious people to catechize the indigenous inhabitants of the area. In Villeta several historic episodes took place as one of the first Independence traces at that time with the meeting of Jose Antonio Galan, a famous commoner of the region, the step of the viceroy Juan de Samano scaping from the patriots or the overthrow of the president Manuel Sanclemente, who died after the terrible tortures by the vice president Jose Manuel Marroquin. During your stay you can visit the Parque de la Molienda, that welcomes all the visitors and the Plaza de la Panela, where you will find the byproducts of the sugar cane. You should also contemplate the Mico waterfalls, with seven natural waterfalls and exotic vegetation around -just accessible with guides from the third waterfall- or the Bocatoma de Bagazal, from where you can admire beautiful landscapes and diverse houses of the area. We stand out the diverse preparations of the sugar cane products as alfandoques, a type of coconut sweet prepared as the molasses, and the soft arequipe, that has milk, sugar and panelita de leche. If you prefer salty food, you also have the ajiaco bogotano, la fritanga with varied meats and a delicious sobrebarrida al horno, with spices.
