Colombian municipality located to the left side of the river Putumayo, in the department of Putumayo. It’s the municipality of greater population of the department. It borders Ecuador and the municipalities of Puerto Caicedo, Puerto Guzman, Orito and San Miguel. Puerto Assis was founded in 1912 by two religious Capuchin missionaries: Father Estanislao de les Corts and brother Ildefonso de Tulcan. The name was chosen in honor of the homeland of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1953, with the construction of the road, it became a commercial exchange center with Mocoa, Sibundoy Valley and Pasto. In 1967, the municipality was officially designated. Currently, its main economic activities are agriculture, livestock, fishing and trade.
