Santa Fe de Antioquía, known originally only as Antioquia, was founded the 7th of December in 1541, although it had to be relocated due to constant raids by natives. For a very long time Santa Fe was capital of the Antioquía Department, and became an important city for the region, with an economy built around the exploitation of local mines and natural resources, and the production of exotic fruits such as custard apple, tamarind and pistachioSanta Fe has an impressive cultural heritage, with colonial architecture in a perfect state of conservation, which led to the city being declared a National Monument of Colombia in 1960, and is now a sought after destination by national and international tourists.
